The Effects of Strikes on Hospital Production: Evidence from California

Grant Type

Early Career Research Award

Description

This study will analyze the effects of work stoppages in the California hospital industry and will apply the framework developed in Gruber and Kleiner (2012) to determine whether hospital strikes affect patient outcomes. The study will specifically apply these methods to a set of California hospital strikes during 1997-2006. The study will use a dataset constructed from records from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) as well as a database obtained from Bloomberg BNA, a leading source of legal, regulatory, and business information. Additionally an updated set of patient outcome measures will be employed.
