The employment effects of generative artificial intelligence (AI) are among the defining labor market questions of the decade. Within two years of ChatGPT’s release, firms worldwide gained access to AI systems that perform cognitive tasks—writing, coding, data analysis—previously requiring high-skilled workers (Brynjolfsson et al., 2025b). Industry analysts warn that 300 million jobs face displacement (Briggs and Kodnani, 2023), yet evidence on AI’s labor market effects remains limited.
